Born in Halifax and brought up in Elland where his father was the local baker. Read law at Hull University. Called to the Bar in 1976 as a 21 year old. Joined the Chambers of James Pickles in Bradford the same year. Practised from those Chambers as a barrister until 2004 when appointed a Circuit Judge, having ‘taken silk’ (become a QC - Queen’s Counsel) in 2000. Retired from the Circuit Bench in 2022 having been the Recorder of Bradford between 2012 – 2017. Sat in the Mental Health Tribunal since 2000. Currently sitting in the Rugby Football League’s Operational Rules Tribunal. Married with three children and four grandchildren. Lives in Huddersfield.
