I grew up in the north-east of England and after graduating with a degree in Engineering and working for a multi-national company, decided to change direction and move into teaching. In a career spanning almost 40 years I taught in three schools my final destination as Headmaster of Bradford Grammar School (1996-2011) following thirteen years at Manchester Grammar School.
On retiring I had the privilege of being the High Sheriff of West Yorkshire (2012/2013).
My interest in education (notably the principle of social diversity) was maintained as a governor of Yarm School (latterly as Chairman of the Board) and I was a trustee of the Abbeyfield Society in Ilkley. Unfortunately health issues have necessitated my relinquishing these two roles.
I much value my role as a DL, particularly that of representing the Lord Lieutenant on Remembrance occasions.
