Served as High Sheriff for West Yorkshire 2002-2003. Qualified as an Associate of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and as a Member of the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers. After working in Land Agency, he began farming in 1978 on mixed arable farms producing cereals potatoes peas and oilseed rape with conservation featuring widely in his management plans.
